Wander - The player-controlled protagonist of the game.
Mono - A (dead?) girl who was sacrificed by her people because she was believed to be cursed.
Agro - Wander’s horse.
Dormin - A disembodied voice that instructs Wander to kill the 16 colossi throughout the agme.
Lord Emon - The leader of a group of soldiers who try to keep Wander from entering the forbidden land and bringing Mono back to life.
Wander enters the forbidden land with Agro and the body of Mono. He enters the temple of 16 idols and places Mono’s body on the altar. Dormin’s voice booms from above and Wander strikes a deal with him: Dormin will return Mono to life if Wander can destroy all 16 idols. The idols can only be destroyed by using the ancient sword Wander carries to destroy the 16 colossi who roam the land.
As Wander kills more and more colossi, his appearance deteriorates and Mono starts to look more alive. At the sixteenth colossus, Agro plummets off a crumbling bridge after throwing Wander to safety on the other side. After defeating the last colossus, Wander appears back at the temple with scary eyes and two horns on his head. Lord Emon and his soldiers have finally caught up to the temple and seeing Wander’s physical state, Lord Emon orders the soldiers to kill Wander. Wander gets stabbed in the heart and shadows cover his body.
Dormin’s spirit takes over Wander’s body and he grows into a giant shadowy figure. Dormin explains that Lord Emon’s people had sealed away his power by separating his body and placing them under the guard of the separate colossi. By killing all the colossi, Wander had helped restore Dormin’s power. Lord Emon flees the temple after throwing the ancient sword at the bottom of a pool at the back of the temple. This creates a whirlpool that pulls Dormin/Wander in. As Lord Emon and the soldiers flee to safety, Emon says that he hopes Wander will be able to atone for his sins.
Mono finally awakens, restored by Dormin, and is joined by a limping Agro. Agro leads her to the pool Wander got pulled into and they find an infant boy with horns on his head. Mono picks up the infant and continues to follow Agro up the steps of the temple and they find themselves in a secret garden.
After all the colossi are killed, Dormin’s power is restored, but he is sucked into a pool of light by the ancient sword Lord Emon threw into the small pool at the back of the temple. Mono is revived, finds an infant boy with horns on his head at the bottom of the pool, and she, the boy, and Aggro make their way up the temple into a secret garden.
